Need A Pick Me Up? This music will help!

So...it's Thursday night around 1 a.m. You've got five homework assignments that are do in the next twelve hours and you have no idea how you are going to get them done. Your brain is on overload and you are about to have a meltdown. But wait...you've just realized you have no music on! No wonder you are stressed. You have nothing to keep you motivated. This needs fixed immediately! So...what should exactly should you turn on? Well, if you're asking me, this is what I suggest.

First off, anything from a musical. For me, it's particularly anything from Rent, Wicked, or The Lion King. I enjoy just being able to act like you are part of the musical and lip syncing in the most ridiculous possible. It's also great if you sing along with a musical you can dance to. Taking a break from my work for two minutes helps so much in the long run. I feel more motivated than ever after and while I'm listening to these things.

Second would definitely be any form of music from various holidays. I am at my happiest when holidays are nearing so why wouldn't I be more motivated when Halloween or Christmas music is playing? My Christmas selection is dominated by CDs of Trans Syberian Orchestra. The blend of old Christmas music with a twist keeps me going for hours on end. I'm full of energy when listening to this music. Now, Halloween, I could listen to anything and instantly be alert. Halloween ties with Christmas as my favorite holiday.

Third, I love listening to opera as a pick me up. Every time I listen, I think about the fact that, in order to achieve my dream of being a opera singer, I must do well in all the classes I'm in. Opera also helps me relieve stress. It is the singlemost art form that can keep me going no matter what.

  1. Rebekah, I'm glad that you have found music to be so helpful with getting your work done! You've been very busy lately, so it must be hard to finish all of your assignments. I absolutely love Christmas music and the Rent soundtrack too! I find it distracting to listen to music while I do homework, but I will definitely try taking two minute breaks to listen to some music.

  2. Thanks, Rebekah. I love holiday music, too--our Christmas CD collection grows every year. We go through everything from the Cambridge Singers to the Squirrel Nut Zippers. My favorite, though, is a Christmas CD put together by one of the mom's from Tally's class for all the kids--it has pretty much every pop music Christmas song you can think of. I love it!

  3. Holidays are the best! I could go for a Christmas song any day. I love Defying Gravity: my fave musical song ever!

  4. Listening to songs from musicals is indeed very cheering and refreshing. It is hard for me to explain how, but musicals really are like pick-me-ups. I guess it is because the songs are mostly bright-sounding and cheery, even if their tempos are slow. Holiday music is also great; it always seems to have the effect of putting listeners into the mood or spirit of whichever holiday it represents, even if the holiday has already passed. Before I watched some of "The Marriage of Figaro," I was very unfamiliar with any opera songs. But now that I've seen an example of what operatic songs are like, thanks to Mozart (and I'm sorry that you don't like that opera at all, Rebekah), I find that I really do like them and would like to hear more.

  5. Music really can be a great pick-me-up. Especially Broadway. That can turn my mood around any day.
